Feb 3, Daddy Day

Today marks one year since Earl passed away. It as been a good day. Mary and I spent the whole day together. I have decided that Mary won't ever have to go to school on February 3. She went to school the day that he died. That should earn her the privilege of taking the rest of them off.

The day started out with a giggle. I was already awake when Mary woke up. She still can not sleep in her own bed. She looks up at me and says "Happy Daddy Day" That set the tone for the rest of the day. We have looked at pictures, worked on a scrap book for him (thank you April Clausen), ate Earl's favorite foods, talked about him and just remembered all the fun things about him. It has truly been a sweet day.

For us, February 3 will forever be known as Daddy Day.

We remember Earl. More to the point, anyone who ever met Earl immediately felt his giving spirit.

Often Earl give gifts. It would be a drawing, sweet rolls, a poem, etc. It always was something he had made, composed, drawn or written.

One treasure was his drawing of a marsh at sunset. He had chosen colors to match the walls of our home--golds, tans and browns. When I see it, I see him bent over his project, ignoring pain, as he blended tones together for our eyes to taste.

Earl gave more in his shortened time than most give in many more years. Knowing Earl has been a precious experience. We will be with him again.

I will always remember Earl in his pioner costume that tan hat and his incredible enthusiasm for anything pioneer related. He was a good man and I am so sorry you had to say goodbye.

That's a great idea. Congratulations on making it through a year. We've often thought of you and know that it's not been an easy year! Glad you were able to spend the day together remembering. :)

I am moved. Though I don't know you, I'm really glad you are doing well and making your Earl still a part of your life in such a beautiful way.
